Many bands (mainly regional and local) offer a free song or two on their websites. You just have to do a web search on Free MP3, or free song download. Also iTunes offers one free song every Tuesday, all you have to do is download iTunes and sign up for a free account.
There are often other free songs on iTunes but Apple doesn't make it very easy to find them.
Amazon.com also has some free music downloads.
If you're looking for free downloads of mainstream stuff (well-known artists)...forget about it...anything you find in that vein will most likely be illegal so there won't be any central site to download those type of songs. They'd be slapped with a cease and desist order from record companies or sued.

ya it's called the radio - tune it to the station you want and there ya go, free music no membership fees...you aren't being all that specific in your question about if you have an IPOD ...but if that's what you are assuming we already knew then limewire has free stuff to download.
