you are most probably correct, take off side panel and check fans by listening closely or unplugging them one by one until noise ceases, but do not run pc without connecting the fans back up. if it is fan then a replacement should not set you back anymore than a fiver. good luck

It does sound like a fan problem. Open the case and check all of the fans. If they look like they are dirty or full of dust, they should be cleaned. The best way to keep the inside of the PC clean is to use compressed air. You can buy compressed air in cans from any place that sells computer parts. Make sure the PC is off before you blast it with the compressed air. If it still makes noise after you clean it with the compressed air, then see if the fan can be removed and give it a spray with a lubricant. If that doesn't work, then you should replace the fan a.s.a.p.

Although AOL gets a lot of flack, I don't think that it would cause the problem.
It sounds like one of two things -

A / The main Case Fan has damaged or warn out bearings and is rattling.

OR

B / One of your case components or sides is loose or vibrating. I had a Compac (HP) full size tower. It would vibrate and rattle like hell when the fan was running. I solved it, by purchasing some self adhesive sound deadening foam from Maplin. I stuck this to the inside of the case and it never happened again.

Maplin also do new case fans at a reasonable price.

Three things can make noises. Cooling fans for processor or chassis or power supply, noisy hard drive ( usually a high pitch whine) or an unbalanced cd/dvd in the drive. Hopefully it is a fan or disk. Replacement is cheaper than ignoring it.

There are miniture fans inside your pc keeping it cool. Make sure air can reach these fans, and the room is kept as cool as can be comfortably.

There is a fan in it, sometimes dust or debris can get in there. Bang on it... don't break it, but sometimes if there's something caught there if you give the top a "beatin" it'll wriggle it free.
