If somebody is just being (apparently) friendly, can they hypnotise you?

That does not mean you will do anything against your will. But will and commonsense may be different?

Hypnosis is a technique to induce deep relaxation only. When hypnotised, a person remains as aware of their surroundings and of what they are doing as they are when not hypnotised, it's just that they may experience themselves and their surroundings in a slightly different way. Full memory of the period of time you are hypnotised is retained, except time may appear to speed up, e.g. you might have spent 30 mintues under hypnosis but it will only feel like ten, this is due to the highly relaxed state, commonly described as being in a 'trance' but it is just being deeply relaxed. How each person experiences being 'hypnotised' depends on many different factors. Some people are more suggestible and therefore susceptible to being hypnotised and may appear to lose all sense of who and where they are (there is often some unconscious compliance with the hypnotist going on here or even conscious faking), these are they type of people that are 'selected' by stage hypnotists, as they make the shows more interesting than more aware people who are not so gullible. People are never pulled out of the audience at random, the 'hypnotist' will always have had opportunity to 'vet' audience members in advance. It is not possible to be hypnotised without your consent nor is it possible to be hypnotised without your knowledge. Anyone who tells you any different doesn't understand hypnosis.

In order to be hypnotised you have to want to be.

Professionals rely on the fact that the people they are performing on willingly want to buy into what they are doing. If you don't want to be hypnotised then nothing will happen because there is no magic or voodoo involved.

Yes, people often put us into trances of one sort or another. The thing to do is always to be aware of our own thoughts and resist programming from others. It is not always so easy ..... Coke vs Pepsi, the Mets vs the Yankees ... Mac Donalds vs Burger King ..... when you might very well have wanted something completely different. You can let your whole life slip by unaware of such things ... but there is always a little voice that will tell you ...and that little voice
is truly your friend...

It is almost impossible to hypnotise someone against there will. Hypnotisim relies on opening the concious mind. I suppose if you were totally relaxed(drunk/on drugs) or half asleep it could be done but it would be extremly rare.

Your subconscious will only allow you to be hypnotised if you want to.

Hypnosis cannot be done when you do not want it to happen. It can be done without your knowledge, though.
