You haven't mentioned your budget, favorite part of town but here are some places that could make for great date venues:

Chez Mimi - (310) 393-0558 - 246 26th St, Santa Monica, CA - This is a gorgeous small French restaurant on the Northeastern end of Santa Monica near Brentwood. The owner is a French-Canadian woman who maintains a traditional French menu including things like Moules Frites (Black Mussels in wine and garlic with crispy french fries - yum) and Bouillabaise. The indoor rooms are charming and have lovely fireplaces, but better than that, most of the tables are set up in an open air courtyard. It's charming, intimate and romantic and the food is great.

A second choice is The Lobster right at the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier - (310) 458-9294 - 1602 Ocean Ave, Santa Monica, CA. Try to arrive before sunset to get maximum romance value. There are no bad seats, but on a warm afternoon/evening, the patio before you enter the restaurant proper is a great place to look at the sun setting over the Pacific and have a drink.

Last suggestion is Diaghilev in the Bel Age Hotel on Sunset. It's a French-Russian restaurant. The food is different from the fare you get in almost every other popular Los Angeles venue and the environment is dark, candelit and very sexy in a grown up way.

Hope this helps. Also take a look at the Chowhound board for Los Angeles - www. chowhound.com

A good place to take a date in Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Irvine Spectrum or Rancho Cucamonga is Yard House (They are in other cities too). They have over 200 beers on tap as well as mixed drinks. The food is dynamite and the atmosphere is cool. You can go dressed up or be under dressed and still fit in. Happy Hour offers good prices on entries.

On Fridays and Saturdays it can get busy and loud so try to get in before about 8:00 pm or request a table outside. They also allow smoking on the patios if either one of you is a smoker.

I think you mean Maggiamo's.
The one I went to was by the South Coast Plaza in Costa mesa and they had nasty food. The pasta was soggy and the tomato marinara sauce was pasty and tasted like something you buy at a super market.
I dunno about the one in The Grove but I'll never eat at a Maggiamo's ever again.
I hear the pizzas are OK though.

If you want some place to go on a date, I guess Axe is nice. (Pronounce ah-shay)

It all depends on what kind of mood you are in. There is Yamashiro's (Hollywood Hills) for a very nice romanitic (and pricey) evening. Then there is the fun place like Dave & Busters (Orange, Santa Anita, Ontario).
