Of course. That's what almost every store does -- Walmart doesn't make everything it sells. Neither does Macy's. They buy stuff from people who manufacture it and sell it to people who want it. So yes, you can buy items, open a business and re-sell them legally (as long as they aren't stolen items!)
However (there's always a however, isn't there?) if you plan to open a business, you will have to get a license. How much that costs depends on where you live. Also, any place where the public is invited to enter has to meet certain safety standards etc.
You can't sell directly out of your home -- that is, people can't come and buy stuff out of your basement -- but you can set up an on-line business and deliver items.
Check with the business bureau or your city hall to find out exactly what you have to do as it varies from place to place, and restrictions in effect in one place may not be valid where you live.
Good luck to you.

you cannot resell them yourself through a business, however if you sell them through a middleman like eBay, it is legal. You can start a business through eBay, but not actually open a store to sell your items. Businesses like Wal-mart, have licenses and contracts that allow them to sell the items that they do. On most products, it specifically says not for resale, however if it is opened and used, then it is at the discretion of the owner as to what they want to do with it.

if you don't make something and you want to make a living then you either sell your time or your buy something at a price and try to sell it to someone else at a higher price. Sears, wal-mart, target etc all do this.
