Use the buttons on the monitor to access the menu and make sure that the settings are returned to factory defaults. Does that fix the problem?
If you have another PC in the house, or at a friends house, plug your 17" monitor into it and see if it works okay with another PC. This will determine if it is the monitor or your PC that is the problem.
If neither of those work, contact Dell user support and go from there. They may be able to help you, or work with you to get it fixed or replaced if it is still under warranty.
Good luck.

if its completely white that usually indicates hardware failure. the other poster said try plugging it into another computer. if its still white make sure you have the VGA cable plugged in and not the DVI Cable the dvi cable is the white one that has slots the vga cable has pins. when you unplug the monitor from your computer it should say diagnostics on the screen and a box with a red blue and green square will bounce around if you unplug it from the computer and you still see white your lcd has failed and it cant be repaired(not buy anyone local anyway). so your best option is to return it. most dell monitors have a 1 year warranty if purchased seperately from the computer. if you bought it with a computer it carries the systems warranty.
