Are they really anygood, when I drive I learn from mistakes and try not to do them again. Can you become to reliant on a sat nav and not use your own initative for a sence of direction. Also which format is better the Tom tom or the new Europe version?

I don't think you can totally rely on Sat Nav. This is because the maps may be out dated due to roadworks - no entry signs etc.

They are a great tool but only if used with common sense.

I use a Tom Tom 700 to drive around the UK and Europe. It will never replace your sense of direction but is a great help along with the speed camera locations that i down loaded as extra. It is great in City's like Paris or London when you do not have time for a look at a map and it is the 1st time that you are going to that address. I prefer the Tom Tom

Hi i Work as an NVQ assessor for Mercedes Benz, i cover an area starting in peterbrough going up as far as newcastle and across to Carlisle and then back down to north wales, now thats a lot of area in my 1st year of the job (when my area was smaller) i coverd 42,000 miles, when i first started i used websites and maps to get me to where i needed to be, however this meant either keeping all that paper with an up to date road atlas in the car and then searching through that lot and then remebering what i found when i got there ( i visit dealerships on a an average 8 weeks cycle). 3 months in to the job i bought a sat nav I bought a Navman ICN320 and i have to say its brilliant, its cheaper than a TOM its more accurate to as my collegeue in bristol has a tom and when we are meeting he often rings me and asks for directions as his cant find some of the places. The sat nav in conjunction with the traffic jam hotline from the AA are invaluable for my job i have a good sense of direction but his device must have saved me hrs over the last year and never put me in a field like some stories and its easy to update as well and as i said cheaper than a tom

I'm an LGV driver and use mine everyday, they are useful but I still check the map (paper & on the Sat nav) to check that the route given is practical, i.e. not through a city centre at rush hour. Can sometimes be useful to put the postcode in, look at the route then enter the address as it sometimes gives a different route. (there are sometimes more than one street/road in an area with the same name). Mine's TOMTOM one.

No, my mum offered to buy me one a tom, as i have to drive alot to different areas for my job, i prefer to use my sense of direction as i feel that i probably would start becoming too reliant, just my opinion
