Just a few times a day is fine. My Dr. said that each time she is awake (about 4 times a day for our little girl) just put her on her belly for as long as she'll tolerate it. She usually lasts about 5 min each time. So that's a total of 20 min a day for us.

The books all say they need at least 15 minutes a day, however . . . my back sleeper was NOT having it and most days got none. At 6 months she started sleeping and playing on her tummy but her shoulder strength was weak and she did not crawl until almost 10 months. Also her head got a little flat at the back, but doc said nothing to worry about and has since rounded. She is very strong now at 11 months, caught up just fine. Certainly if you can get them to play several times a day for 15 mins, do it but don't worry if yours refuses!! Good luck!

As much as your baby is comfortable with. Many babies are very content laying on their tummies and will happily stay on their stomechs for as long as you leave them in that position. While I'm watching tv in the livingroom I will often put a large baby quilt or blanket on the floor and let my baby (3 weeks old) lay on her tummy. She is fine like that for up to an hour. As long as you are around to supervise there is no such thing as too much tummy time.

well my newborn which is now 3 months old, would only sleep on his tummy, thats the only way he sleeps, and he is so active, and very strong he can sit up straight, and even stand with power its amazing hes only 3 months, so it should be fine to put the baby on their tummy until u see them get fussy, then change their positions

I would usually give mine 5-10 min twice a day. At such a young age they don't need much, but I would recommend you prop him/her upper half on a pillow because their head muscles aren't very strong yet and he/she might smack his/her face on the floor.
