A lot of it, for parents, esp., is that their kids are not turning out the way they'd hoped (you know, honors students, football heroes, cheerleaders and so on) and it freaks them out. They fear what they don't understand.

I disagree w/people who say that being goth is always a "phase"! It's just one lifestyle, which may or may NOT include disaffection from society, kind of like Hippie lifestyle. There are plenty of aging hippies nowadays and I don't see the goths as any scarier or unhappy!

If someone REALLY wants to keep a certain lifestyle, why should others get into such a fit about it? Well, you see the HUGE debates here between Christians and Atheists (Xtians being mostly on the "offensive" end). People don't respect each other's right to believe what they want & live how they want!

Because the majority of adults do not dress in that fashion. It's seen as a phase that teenagers go through. In most case it is. I am 24 and 90% of the people I knew who were "goth" are no longer. They grew out of it. They may still enjoy some of the music, and things associated with being goth, but they do not dress in "goth attire".

Because a lot of people who proclaim goth, particularly some (albeit not all) of the younger kids do so to rebel against the norm in society. Just like anything else, some people searching for themselves will go through phases. The Goth phase just appeals to more of these individuals because it is so different from normal and conservative society.

Perhaps the only 'goths' they've ever seen are teenagers who (usually) grow out of it, not the old school goths in their thirties, forties, fifties and so on. So all they know of goth is the melodramatic teeny version. Besides, as people get older sometimes they dress more casually, as opposed to corsets and skirts everyday. So they probably have seen a few, but didn't recognize them. ;)

i think most people relate it to a "teen phase" as the notice the style of dress, and many teens do go threw dress phases, during high school especially

I think so because I dated a guy who was supposed to be so uber-goth that he practically thought he was the devil himself. Had him laughing, hanging around during the day and dressing in colors within weeks.

Cause its not a good look when your 35.....When i went to school in the 80's people where goths then, and they sure aren't Goths now.

Because often, it is. That's not to say there are no "permanent" adult goths, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

I would think it's becuse most people who go through that so called "phase" are younger and in their rebellious age. Also...because most people (and I don't mean all) eventually grow out of that.
