does anyone have any idea what these instant messengers are like? could you reccomend one if so please add detail, do they communicate with other messenger types? only just realised they exist and want to check em out, thanx...

Skype: Great for audio/video/text messaging
ICQ: Not really "instant" but still works.
IRC: You are able to open a channel and have as many people as you want in the channel messaging simultaneously

use either "gaim" or "trillian" both of these clients will connect to any messenger service using only one application.
you can make phone calls with skype for free on the internet. im not sure if it does im's

i think icq is the best and simplest.
there's another: msn, but i dislike it, as it is to... microsoft-like if you know what i mean. :)

skype is good for voip but it takes mad bandwidth.
ICQ is for vets who want to "look elite" its not that great
IRC is for people to argue about who killed who etc.
