i am amazed at how many people really think this. do they not realize that he started showing up in a uniform as soon they started talking of a army. most will say will it was in his speech to Congress after but they only see half the speech here it is

I beg they will accept my cordial thanks for this distinguished testimony of their approbation. But lest some unlucky event should happen, unfavorable to my reputation, I beg it may be remembered by every gentleman in the room that I this day declare with the utmost sincerity I do not think myself equal to the command I am honored with. As to pay, Sir, I beg leave to assure the Congress that as no pecuniary consideration could have tempted me to accept this arduous employment at the expense of my domestic ease and happiness, I do not wish to make any profit from it. I will keep an exact account of my expenses. Those I doubt not they will discharge, and that is all I desire."

he is protecting his honor by saying he didn't want it.

George Washington had a second problem that is related to this. He was naturally building a cult of personality around himself that was out of his control. While he probably did wish to lead the army, it was more because he felt he was best qualified that he did it. There were some in the colonies who didn't really believe in democracy (many considered the American Constitution an interesting social experiment), and would have preferred to have seen a good man like Washington made king or some equivalent to that. George believed in democracy, and didn't want to be elevated to a status that would harm the future of our democratic government.
