We budget $50 to $100 per grandchild-our children are grown now so the needs have changed. We also encourage ask our grown kids to donate either time or money to their favorite charity instead of buying us a gift. And they do. We are not rich people, but their are a lot of people who need things worse than we do. Sometime we still end up with gifts, and if so - we still appreciate them.

I personally budget about $600. With $200 going to my daughter. I always use cash, not credit and have NEVER gone into debt. I think it is silly to go into debt over Christmas. If you don't have it, family will understand. I spend only $40 on each person. It's not what you spend but what you give.

I don't budget... I shop all year long spending very little. My guess would be I spend about $10 to $17 per person. I only need to shop for about 10 people. The greatest bargain I recently got was a $60 winter jacket for my sister... I paid just $9 but left the $60 tag on...
I keep a record book of what I got who since I shop so early and wrap early too I tend to forget who is getting what. It also helps me keep track so I don't give the same gift the next year to the same person.

Before the season begins, we set an amount for our kids. THis amount is saved in a money market account until Christmas season hits. This keeps Christmas spending in check and we don't borrow (Credit Cards) for Christmas. The best Christmas is the one that doesn't follow you into the new year......

For the past 3 years I've ONLY used my checking accounts MasterCard debit card. If I don't have the cash, I'm not buying it.
Why go into debt for Christmas? You wouldn't do it any other day. Your family / friends should understand; and remember - its the thought that counts.
