"The House of Representatives shall choose their speaker and other officers" The U. S. Constitution.

The House of Representatives votes to decide who will be the speaker of the house ... the speaker is almost always a member of the majority party.

All members vote, the ruling party wins because they have the numbers. I just wish all of the Republicans had voted for the same Dem and had gotten at least 16 or 17 other Dems to vote for him too. San Fran Nan sure isn't gonna make very many Americans proud to have her as speaker. And wouldn't it have been kool for the Republicans to have made the choice. A conservative Dem or even a moderate Dem would be a lot less scary.

Being the leader of the party with a majority in the House! It though sounds strange as Speaker is supposed to be one acceptable to all parties - ruling and the opposition. Thus he/she should be elected by all members of the House!
