anorexia is where you eat very little or nothing at all and bulimia is where you eat everything in the house then puke it up. either way it can kill you or cause severe health problems

Both are eating disorders. Anorexia is when someone eats very little (like one Cheerio for breakfast) and slowly wastes away. I saw a program yesterday where an anorexic was 5'2" and weighed 62 pounds. Not only do they eat very little, but they are compulsive exercisers. This woman walked 20 miles a day and did 500 crunches and 600 leg lifts. People like this usually die of a heart attack.

Bulimia is when a person gorges and then purges the food eaten via vomiting, laxatives and any other way to get rid of the food. They, too, can exercise to extremes.

What happens with both these situations is that the illness is the symptom of problems. Unfortunately, the symptom becomes the problem.

Both can be lifetime battles.

Anorexics are by definition underweight and refuse to eat more than about 500 calories a day. Bulimics tend to be of normal weight but go through cycles of binging and purging. Binging is often out of control and purging can be by starving or misusing laxatives or vomiting.

Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes an eating disorder characterized by low body weight and body image distortion. Individuals with anorexia often control body weight by voluntary starvation, purging, vomiting, excessive exercise, or other weight control measures, such as diet pills or diuretic drugs. It primarily affects young adolescent girls in the Western world and has one of the highest mortality rates of any psychiatric condition, with approximately 10% of people diagnosed with the condition eventually dying due to related factors. Anorexia nervosa is a complex condition, involving psychological, neurobiological, physiological and sociological components.
Bulimia nervosa, more commonly known as bulimia, is an eating disorder. It is a psychological condition in which the subject engages in recurrent binge eating followed by an intentional purging. This purging is done in order to compensate for the excessive intake of the food and to prevent weight gain. Purging typically takes the form of vomiting; inappropriate use of laxatives, enemas, diuretics or other medication; excessive physical exercise, or fasting. The main criteria differences involve weight, as an anorexic must technically be classified as underweight (defined as a BMI < 18.5, though to be diagnosed with anorexia, the patient generally must have a BMI of less than 17.5). Typically an anorexic is defined by the refusal to maintain a normal weight by self-starvation. Another criteria which must usually be met is amenorrhea, the loss of her menstrual cycle not caused by the normal cessation of menstruation during menopause. Generally the anorexic does not engage in regular binging and purging sessions. In the rare instant that this is observed, in that the patient binges and purges as well as fails to maintain a minimum weight they are classified as a purging anorexic, due to the underweight criteria being met. Characteristically, those with bulimia nervosa feel more shame and out of control with their behaviors, as the anorexic meticulously controls her intake, a symptom that calms her anxiety around food as she feels she has control of it, naïve to the notion that it, in fact, controls her. For this reason, the bulimic is more likely to admit to having a problem.
