i am amazed at how many people actually think this,or he took the army out of a sense of duty. do they not know that Washington as soon as they said at congress they that they needed a commander and chief of the army.He started showing up to meetings in uniform. that right there should proves he wanted the army and why can't they see that he was a southern gentlemen and he was being modest by acting like they were twisting his arm to do it

When a person or an event is so far in the past that there is no one alive to remember it, legends flourish. From the belief that:

". . . Washington could have installed himself as King of the victorious nation . . .(instead) retire(d) to his plantation on Mount Vernon, an exemplar of the republican ideal of citizen leadership."

to:

". . .refusing to pursue a third term (as president of the USA). . ."

Washington may be seen as a humble person. People may take the humulity shown in these two instances and apply it to Washington's entire life experiences.

They thought of something else. Confused with history probably. He was probably scared and that's why we thought, well others might have thought that. Are you talking about the city or Washington president of the United States?
