The Lark--at the very end there's a short monologue.

It's about Joan of Arc--great stuff.

be careful with the 1 minute monolgue books. They can usually tell if you used one... which is being a lazy actor. Time to visit the library!

Read a few plays all the way through. Then pick a portion that is mainly one person dialog (doesn't have to all be.) You can splice it up between two different parts that the character speaks. If there is dialog in it with another character, just cut it out (as long as your character's dialog carries by itself)

ie. "I don't know what to do Sylvia. -pause- What?!?! I can't do that!" (catch my drift?)

of course to carry the abscence of the dialog you have to have a reaction as if the other character is there in front of you and actually said their line.

Edit your own monologue from a play and it'll be much better PLUS you'll understand the monologue because you actually read the whole play (which will give you better motives blah blah blah -you'll be able to understand the character more!) instead of just picking it out of a monologue book at random.

Ok I'll stop rambling now, Break a Leg!

I just finished a degree in acting so I know all the tricks. Why not try the library? Search for monologue books. Should turn up something. When you go to the stacks to find it there should be lots more sources available. Personally, I like the collections called Contemporary Monologues for Men/Women. Have some good material. As well, if you are in school, chances are you have read some scripts that you like. You can also choose from one of them, but be very careful, many of the plays we read in school may end up on an overdone monologue list. Be sure to know that you are doing something that isn't overdone and that suits your style. I would recommend something dramatic and make sure you add levels and have "somewhere to go" (emotionally) with it.

basically you need a monologue. maybe you could read some poetry add in motions and change up your voice a little bit. or write a short story on a subject that you think is funny or serious and present it that way. what ever you do try to get the class interested in the subject.

try Degas Cest' Moi by David Ives... the whole play is pratically a monolugue... If not other works by Ives are equally good and solo...

go to the library, they have books and books and books filled with one minute monologues. and don't try shakespeare unless you are reallllllly good at it, shakespeare always turns out bad for most people.

good luck!
