Background checks typically consist of:
Credit Check - bad credit could make you a risk. It would also reveal garnishments and support orders.
Law Enforcement check - Scope will depend on the company, they may check at a city, county, state or federal level. They will see if there are warrants and criminal activity associated with your name. (Can be a challenge if you have a common name!)
They may also verify and validate any memberships, past employment, references, education and certifications that you have claimed.

Generally, on a background check, any and all criminal (felony & misdemenor) activity. Some include your driving record. It will also include all your previous addresses.
I have a feeling that you may have also signed a document relasing your credit report. Generally, a background check and a credit report check go hand in hand. If you are concerned about what is contained in your credit report, you can get one free copy a year from each of the BIG three. If you go to www.freecreditreport.com and enter in your information, you will get them by mail. You can also perform a background check on yourself for free and/or a small fee. If you would like to know more, feel free to contact me. I have a book that goes over that and would help you!!!!

They basically pull your criminal record (if you have one).
If you have nothing to hide, don't worry about it.
The record shows what you have been cited/arrested for, the sentence given you, probation periods (if any) and the fines or penalties that were incurred.
Usually it covers both traffic and other charges.
Wanna see mine? J/K
I do have one, but it is just traffic stuff.
A back ground check involves more. They will sometimes do a credit report, verify employment history, verify government employment (if you had any) and security clearances you may have had from the Government. Sometime they even check out your family.
Like I said, they can get real detailed but if you have nothing to hide, don't worry. Be happy!

I cut and pasted that from the site I noted on my source list, it gives you all the info about background checks you need to know.
It's pretty interesting, I think. I have always wondered that myself. I always get nervous about it too!!

depends on the type of backgroundd, if it's a general employment background, they will most likely chcek previous employers, driving records, and police records (such as sexoffender listings).
If it involves a security clearance, then it will be more indepth, talk to neighbors, check bank records, check credit history...

Just about anything, depending on how hard they're looking. I had to get a Top Secret clearance in the army and it was down-right scary what they knew.
For most jobs though, any arrest, fine, civil judgment, credit information, etc.
