I like to get informations from anyone who experienced with copper IUD as birth control. I just decided to have one. I am 26 and I have 4 small children. I think now is the time for me to start going on birth control before getting pregnant again and I choose this method which I think is the most effective.

My question is:
-Do you really check the strings every month as required?

-What if I didn`t take it out after it is expired? Will that harm my body or will I get pregnant?

- Does inserting or taking out the IUD really hurt ?

pls help.

I have the Mirena IUD..........I do check the strings regularly. It didn't hurt at all getting it put it. I'm 39 and my husband and I have 5 kids. He can not have a vasectomy because of other health reasons so this was a great choice for us. I love having it.

Inserting the IUD is not painful, a slight pinch, a little uncomfortable. Most of the time I checked the "string". You need to follow directions as closely as possible. I was not told my cycles would be much heavier, more cramping, which is supposed to be "normal" when using the IUD. My first few cycles were heavy, after 2 or 3 months they were pretty much back to MY normal. It is still possible to become pregnant, but rare. My friend had that experience. Good luck. Consider tubal ligation, or your husband, a vasectomy.

Not the copper but my was inserted by ob gyn and they also removed it. No it didn't hurt, some pressure but I definitely followed their advice. Don't recommend leaving it indefinitely, your asking for problems.
