Networks and internet connection question?

Question

I am using a wireless network for the internet. How come, even though I get a good signal and it connects, I only sometimes get the internet?
Sometimes when I get connected to the network I get the internet for about 30secs then it goes off. I could reconnect again but that's not exactly convenient.

Anyone have any ideas?

I'm guessing that you're using 802.11b/g?
If so, changing the channel on the wireless is a good idea, I'd try moving 3 or 4 channels from where you started. Most likely, you've got another wireless device trying to use the same channel. (i.e. a wireless phone, or a neighbor's computer network). Also, you can check for common sources of interference, like microwaves, florescent lights, metal walls in the way... You're dealing with a radio, so if there's anything that would interfere with signal on a cell phone, or a remote control car, it might interfere with your wifi as well.

If that doesn't work, or you can't figure out how to change the channel, you can call the company that made the router, and talk to tech support. That might just be an ordinary configuration error, and even if it's not, they might be able to help (Be polite, and patient, if they seem to be running through a lot of basic stuff, that's where most people make a small slipup).

well your not alone! wireless nets can be rather unstable.
If you are using an adsl wireless router then try changing the channel you use. it may be interferance causing the problems.
If your wireless signal comes from another pc with internet connection sharing then check on that pc that other network users can control the adsl connection and that automatic connection is on.(right click the adsl icon in taskbar.
I have just spent the best part of a year trying to get various configs to work for this, in the end I used an old P2 as a network server. That does nothing but connect to the adsl line and pump it out through a wireless card. If you want to try the same it will cost about £20 for an old pc and other junk.
You see XP sucks at doing anything well, let alone more than one thing. Try to keep your setup as simple as possible with as little non-essential software running as possible.

that happened to me a couple months ago and i did call tech support and the person told me to move the router to a less conjested / enclosed area and have it more exposed and open in the room or a high place without that much interferance. Also what helped me was using a small fan to go on top of the router because it got hot from time to time and it went offline alot.

unplug the modem for about 30 seconds then plug it in again
