The Chevrolet 302 was only available in the Camaro Z28
It was first found in the 1967 - 1969 Z28. Chevrolet produced a special 302 in³ (4.9 L) engine for Trans Am racing. It was the product of placing the 3-inch stroke crankshaft from a 283 into a 4-inch bore 327 block. This engine was only used in the first-generation Camaro Z28. Conservatively rated at 290 hp (216 kW), actual output was at least 320 hp (239 kW). This block is one of 3 displacements that underwent a transformation for the 1968/1969 period when the main bearing size was increased from 2.30 in to 2.45 They were built to meet the rules requirements for Trans Am racing. A certain amount of these engines needed to be made available to the public to be used in this racing series.
This was a racing engine placed in a street machine. The only problem was that it didn't last long if abused. Only 15,000 miles or so. Because of this, Chevrolet recalled this model Camaro and replaced the engine with the 350. A 1969 Z28 with the original 302 is very collectible.
An lesser known version was in a very few 1977 Camaro Z28 Anniversary Edition. This Camaro had a 302, Camel hump heads, cross-way Holley 4 barrel, factory headers, shorty catalytic converters and mufflers. I think all were 4 speeds. The one that a rleative of mine bought new may have been a COPO car, but i'm not sure.
In 2000, Chevrolet built a Camaro Z28 302 concept car, but this one off car never made it into production.
