I just finished taking an existentialism class in school and i think it's bloody genius, some questions though...
Some internal problems with existentialism that i see are as follows. For one thing, one wonders why we should even care if we are in the condition existentialists say we are. Why care about being authentic, about operating in good faith, as we create our own existence? Why bother about... bothering at all? Why not just eat, drink and be merry? Regarding standards of value, how can one avoid the notion that there are some values that everyone should accept, universal standards of good and evil, beauty and ugliness? We can't help believing some things are worth preserving while others are unworthy of our efforts. Is this due to our societal conditioning from which there's no return, or is existentialsm plain wrong?

It just is...OK.

I guess the you need to decide if humanity is destined to be united or if it is reasonably acceptable for us to segregate ourselves into groups of like minded individuals. I am inclined to think we shouldn't be forced to come to agreements with everyone.

You took a whole course and don't know the answer to these questions?

Heidegger explains all this...

How do we figure out what Being is? WELL, us humans (dasein) disclose being ina peculiar way, vis. being as an issue for dasein. And it is the world that dasein navigates, we are beings-in-the-world. What matters, what concerns us is our being in and alongside the world. So what..! you say. Well If you don't care (sorge) you're missing the point of anxiety and despair, these conditions are the result of running away from our being-towards-death. Authenticity faces our uprootedness, the fact that we are thrown into this world and must find a way to cope. If you don't face death, you are not confronting your own being. If you do, then the care structure of the world makes sense. Since your essence is to be concerned about being, and the world, care is an essential strategy for coping: authenticity. While despair is neglect of your own nature.

Values don't just appear for each individual but on a whole historical backdrop. The way that we are today would be grossly aberrant to past peoples without all the cultural art to aid their understanding. That's the point of Heidegger's section on Time, to elucidate history. If you do enough investigation you can see what the cultural-historical horizon is, and can engage it through various modes, but only if you channel it through some accepted modality. There are no ultimate standards to judge, but the backdrop we are given (our language, philosophy, art) which changes.
