On May 10 I had what was supposed to be a brand new Whirlaway 984 garbage disposal installed by a professional plumber. It has a 10 year warranty. After 6 months a piece broke off and it doesn't work anymore. The piece is very rusty. Does new equipment like this rust that fast? My concern is this: Was an "old/used" garbage disposal installed and I paid for a new one? This would be consumer fraud, if that is the case. Or is it common for garbage disposal parts to rust that fast?

Did you actually see the new disposal and then see it put in. I installed about a thousand of these and know of people in the business that would take an old one out and put it in a rental unit. A new one was put in a house for sale.
Or, ask the plumber back, show him what you found, if you have a ten year warranty, get another one. Keep the B.B.B. on the line though.
