I've tried cleaning the entire house, but I can't tell where this smell is coming from. I washed the basement floors with bleach (this is where the litter box is, so I started there.) I washed all my other floors with floor cleaner. I've washed walls and sprayed all fabrics with Febreeze. Still, when you enter my house it smells like a litter box.

I need to take care of this TODAY because I'm having guests this evening.

First, if you still have the cat, get rid of the cat and the litter box.

Next, place newspaper on the floor in every room and put about six charcoal briquettes on the newspaper. Open your windows as well.

There are several products on the market that will can help get rid of the smell but seriously this works
White vinigar, it nutrilizes teh amonia in pet urine
pour it full strength on the stain and let it sit after a little while use an old towel to mop up the excess. Yes your house will smell like a salad but its better than cat pee. be surea nd do a small test site in an inconspicuous area first to make sure the vinigar won't alter your carpet color, (I have burgundy carpet and it didnt hurt it at all)
This is a quick fix, you really need tohave the carpets cleanned proffessionally ASAP or the cat will just continue to pee in the same spot
good Luck

If you're bleaching you're floors, I'm assuming you've already changed the litter itself. The box needs to be cleaned occasionally (frequency depends on how dirty your cat is and whether or not you use liners), but I can't see this stinking up your whole house.
Go through your laundry and make sure everything is washed and clean. (Sometimes cats will get into laundry piles/baskets and pee there.) Turn off your heat (if it's cold where you are) and open your windows for as long as you can to get fresh air circulating in the house.
If you find a stain or spot where you the smell is concentrated, you could try the vinegar trick, or they sell odor eliminators at the pet stores, and sometimes larger department stores, that won't make your house smell like a side-dish and tend to work well.
Have a neighbor/friend/relative come over and ask them if they can smell anything. It could just be in your head.

Stains and odors are a real problem for pet owners and they can lead to "repeat performances" from your pet because many pets are drawn back to the same spot to relieve themselves. The key to preventing more mess is to clean the mess immediately...but before you clean, put the animal outside or in another room; otherwise, he might think that he did something good that got your attention. Use paper towels to blot up as much of the urine as you can. Flush the carpet with clean water and continue blotting. If your cat is the one urinating on the carpet, put the soaked paper towels in the litter box to remind her that the litter box is the proper place for her to eliminate. Put some club soda on the spot to help bring any remaining urine to the surface. Blot it with paper towels again. If your pet has been making messes regularly on the carpet, use a black light to find all the urine areas. You can buy a black light at a novelty store or you might be able to find one at your home center. It emits an ultraviolet light that will allow you to find all the pet stains. Use a wet vacuum on the carpet to remove all the urine. After the carpet is clean and dry, use an odor neutralizer. You can buy these at a pet store. Follow the instructions for using the odor neutralizer and that should take care of your problem. If a stain remains, use a carpet cleaner designed for pet stains. Tip: Never use a steam vacuum to clean pet messes. You’ll end up setting the stain and odor in the carpet...and, if the urine has soaked down into the padding, the best way to get rid of the smell is to replace the padding. Tip: It's important not to discipline your pet after the fact. It might confuse them or even lead them to believe that the act of elimination is a bad thing.

Another thing that worked for me was combining baking soda with hydrogen peroxide and a drop or two of liquid soap. Good luck.

It may mask the odor instead of repair it, but clean your floors with floor cleaner and add bleach. Also, open your windows and get some candles going. Strong candles. Burn them all day and you will only smell that smell in the evening.

Also, had your cat peed on the carpet? If so, you may want to consider professional shampooing or replacing the carpet all together as I am pretty certain that you probably have cat pee just sitting on the floor underneath your carpet. There's no cure for this other than replacing or professional cleaning. Good Luck!

If you have drapes over your windows, check them. That is where my mother-in-law's cats loved to spray. Wash the drapes in Hot water with bleach (if possible) or have them cleaned. You may check your furniture (Sofa, love seat, ect.) to see if they have been used for the litter box or sprayed.
I bought Urine Be Gone from Target and sprayed all the spots that showed up with the black light that came in the kit. The smell when away and I only had to spray the big spots two to three times before they were gone. This worked where my Shih Tzu had an accident. I hope this helps.

Is this a recent problem or has your house smelled of cat urine all along, but now that guests are coming, you want to take care of it? Let me make some assumptions: First you have at least one male cat; Second you have more than one cat; Third the male is fairly young, like 1- 2 years old; Fourth, either a cat is new to your home, or you have recently moved to a new home.
Fifth, your cats are neutered or spayed. If I am anywhere close to your situation, then the smell you have is the smell of a male cat "spraying" urine to mark his territory. If that is the case, he has probably marked most of your house. Check your doors and the carpets in front of the doors. Cats know that is where people (and animals) come and go from. They are warning other cats not to come in. Depending on what kind of door or rug you have, you will have varying success cleaning out the smell. My sister had a beautiful wooden door that her cat sprayed. She had to replace the door. Since you need a quick fix, the best you can do now is go heavy on room deodorizers, spicy fragrances work better than fresh or floral ones. Good luck. Oh and if you cats are NOT spayed or neutered - that is job one for next week.

Urine Gone (get a walmart). I use it and recommended it to a friend refurbishing a house that was owned by a cat-lady and he couldn't work for the stench of ammonia. I told him to use this stuff and by that afternoon, he thanked me profusely. It neutralizes the odors of urine. Best of luck. My friends thanks was enough to prove to ME that this stuff really works well and fast!

If you have houseplants that are on the floor, check the dirt in there. Cats like to use those for a litter box if their's isn't too their liking.
