I thought it was a WWII expression but this site claims it is way earlier. My dad served in the USMC in WWII and it was one of his many hilarious and confusing expressions.

"sh###it out of luck"....it is one of the colloquial terms that came into use in the late sixties, early seventies. (In American Englis that is)
