And how did dancing suddenly change into the "dancing" we do today? Was dancing something "fun" to do? Did they go out once a week to hang out with their friends at a dance? Details please!

The Mambo, the West Coast Swing, the Cha Cha, the Bosa Nova, the Stroll, the Jive were popular in the 1950's as well as many of the older dances such as the waltz, the jitterbug, and the foxtrot.

Yes, dancing was something fun to do, though for me it was the 60's, not the 50's. And yes, it was generally something we did once a week to hang out. In the 60's we had "sock hops". Elvis came to the forefront in the 1950's and so we had rock and roll, which changed dancing forever!!

If you get a chance to watch someof the old Happy Days TV programs you'll see a glimpse of how it was in the 50's.

I hope this helps.

I was born in 1952 with older siblings who seemed to have great fun, and the jive was THE dance. We had a cafe with a juke box just like 'happy days" and I remember many occasions when I was enthralled at the net petticoats and leather jackets, and they danced all Friday and Saturday nights before and after the "pictures".( going to the movies) This was australia, usa may have been different, but was certainly much more fun than life for the kids today, but then life is what you make it! Have fun!

The Locomotion, The Monster Mash and towards the beginning of the 60`s The twist. They were lots of fun and we went to the Lachine Yacht Club every week for the dance.

here are just a few
If you were around then, you know the names by heart: The Twist. The Hully Gully. The Watusi. The Jerk. The Fly. There were dozens of others.
Yes, it was fun to do, we would go to sock hops on Friday and Saturday night. It was a place to meet with all your friends and check out the Boys. Show off your new poodle skirt and your new saddle oxfords.
We could drool over the latest songs by Elvis, and Ricky Nelson.
After we could cruise around in our '57 chevys.

The Bop was big. American Bandstand was on and it was very popular. There were school dances, but mainly people danced in their living rooms along with A. B. I don't know how we went from dancing to todays "dance"

Was the Lindy Hop one? I think swing might have stated to become popular during this time also.
