How do you think cattle get off cattle trucks? by walking DOWN ramps. I not only grew up in the cattle business but I rode Bulls for 13 years and fought them as a rodeo clown for 8 year and I can tell you from experience that not only can cattle run down ramps, they can walk down stairs as well as jumping an 8 foot fence. Never underestimate cattle, they're more agile and stronger than most people give them credit

Until we remodeled, our dairy cows had to exit the milking parlor by descending three steps only slightly larger than human-sized steps. Our 125 cows descended those stairs twice a day, so they they can at least do that much!

Holstein dairy cows are so large, though, that I would think that a full human-size stair case would be daunting or impossible to descend. Just look at a photo of a cow's hind leg. The way the hoof angles from the leg would require a fairly wide step to safely accommodate the hoof, the angled pastern above it, and the leg...plus more angle to the leg as the cow shifts her weight to the back as she descends.

Going up, though, would only require slightly more step space than the hoof would take.

So....in theory, a cow would require a larger step to comfortably descend than she would require to ascend.

A cow that refuses to descend stairs is probably smarter than the human asking her to.

Our cows amuse themselves by climbing a huge pile of broken concrete in their pasture. I would consider it more a challenge than regular steps. They have no problem coming back down.

This is true. Many a college prankster has led a cow up stairs to the top floor in a campus building to give the staff the challenge of getting them back downstairs again. In the meantime, considerable fertilizer is deposited.

A cow will usually walk up stairs but when it come time to walk down, they will jump instead. If you replace the stairs with a ramp, they will walk down it, but for some reason when it is steps, they jump.
