My doctor printed a whole slew of pictures out for herself, and actually took the time to print two specifically for me (she told me at the time that these would be pictures for me to take home). This was at 9 weeks. I'd let your doctor know that you'd like to have copies of the photos for your own records. As one poster stated, you do have the right to access and have copies of anything in your medical file - including sonogram photos. After all - it's YOUR medical file, about YOUR body.
You're certainly entitled...

Actually depending on where your from, the doctor does NOT have to give you copies of any tests or sonograms you go for. In Alberta Canada for example, all medical files are property of your doctor, if you make an appointment with him/her they will usually show you your test results, however they do not have to give them to you, nor are they obligated to. (It varies by province, and I have no idea how these things work in the US)
That being said however when I went for my ultrasound, the technician printed out a bunch of pictures for the doctor and then also two for me that showed the baby very well, and gave me those copies.

I've had five sonograms so far and I've gotten pictures at four out of the five appts (the fist one was 5 weeks and well, wasn't much there for a picture). Maybe certain doctors are different. I know they keep copies for themselves but I don't know why he wouldn't give you one picture.

It does seem a little strange, especially since the machine will make more than one copy. If you're not comfortable with the answer he is giving you, it might be worth it to change doctors.

how sad, they gave me a pic from the sonogram as soon as i had it done. thats something you want to keep for your baby book, he should give you one at each sonogram. be sure to say that up front when you have your 20 week ultrasound.

You have a right to a copy of anything in your medical file. (there may be charges if they choose to impose them) Tell him you know you have rights and you insist on a copy. It may just look like a bean, but it's your sweet little bean.
