I think it was a team from the Midlands or Northern England back in the early to mid 1900's

I called the FA and they actually have a Historian on staff, so here's the answer: It was West Auckland in 1908 but it wasnt the World Cup. It was a club competition started by Sir Thomas Lipton. West Auckland (County Durham) went to Italy and beat the likes of Juventis, but it wasnt the World Cup. The Historian says people like to romantise it by saying it was the first world cup but it wasnt. Thanks to all that answered.

when England won the world cup in '66 a few of the key players in the squad played for west ham inc Sir Geoff Hurst
but it could have been one on Italy's wins because most Italians never leave their home country nearly all the key players in the '06 team played for Juventus, inter Milan or ac Milan the only one worth mentioning is Luca Toni

Additional trivia the team from Auckland played in black and white
striped shirts (like Newcastle) and the locals were so impressed by them that Juventus subsequently chose to play in the same strip.

In a similar vein, in 1872 Scotland (represented solely by the Queens Park team) played England. Nothing to do with your question, I know...........
