Legally, "your right to swing your fist ends where my nose starts". The KKK gets to have a rally, and I get to have a counter rally - or the entire community can ignore them, denying them the attention they crave and arresting them the second they break anything or become disorderly. We get to laugh at them, make a mockery of them, point at them and tell our kids that thats what dunces caps look like, etc. They get their freedom of speach, but we get to pursue legal action when they incite a riot, damage property, attack someone, stalk someone, etc.
As far as our personal interactions with intolerant people - its up to each person to pick their battles. In our family, anyone inside the house who says anything that degrades anyone based on their race, religion, sexuality, disability, etc is told that that kind of talk isn't allowed in our house, and they are then asked to leave by anyone who hears the comment (even a child).

Intolerance should only be as tolerated as on can tolerate it. Suppose you are in the work place and someone is being sexually harassed - this is a great opportunity to be intolerant - you have community and legal support and it is your duty to keep the work place safe by reporting it. However, if you are in an area where you are the minority I would say-bite your tongue and keep moving-your safety is the thing at risk and you need to be tolerant in their "land". It all depends on whether or not you can act safely and within the bounds of law. You cannot start a riot or burn someones place of religious gathering to the ground, you must strive to educate and become educated. By being educated we can reduce intolerance as we all come to understand one another.

Intolerance is intolerable (by definition). It is hard to get to the root of your question.
You must refer to the public domain. If somebody is intolerant in your own private property, you will ask them to leave.
Tolerance is a personal trait. If the majority become intolerant, there is no indication of fair play or reason. e.g. if a motorist is parking on the pavement, some people are tolerant, some are not.
UK law is a bit bizarre regarding tolerance, but that is another subject.

If we are intolerant of intolerance, doesn't that make us intolerant - the very thing we are trying to destroy? Ouch, my head hurts...

To some extent it has to be tolerated, because some people will never be enlightened, to any degree, to get past their predjuices. We can only try to get people to broaden their views, and at some point it is futile to continue.
