I think he broke a hold some time ago.
Breaking a hold means he let go of his Partner

Mario and Karina broke the hold during the Tango, which is a big no-no in ballroom dancing. Also, they did a lift in one dance, I forget which one. And for this competition no lifts were allowed until the last week in the free dance. Yes, I would say that is mostly the professional dancer's fault because she had known the rules.

Mario really was the better dancer, but Emmitt had a larger fan base. and he was good too.
