Maybe she is embarrassed by your behavior in some way.
I was always apologizing for my Xhusband because he had no social skills and was always being rude for absolutely no reason to people.
Apologizing was my way of saying I don't agree with his behavior, but he is who he is.
Now, I didn't apologize when he would be rude to someone who deserve it...I admired that, because I'm a good deal more passive and have to be truly provoked to be rude. Well used to be.

It's just the proper thing to do. However, the receiver of the apology may accept, but know inside that it isn't sincere since it wasn't from you personally.
