For all of you who don't know, its a children's book thats making waves in Shiloh, Illinois. Its based on the true story of two male penguins from New York's Central Park Zoo who adopted a baby chick and raised it as their own. Parents of the children are complaining of the homosexual overtones and believe that children are not mature enough to handle such an idea. My spin is that children in some respects handle issues like these with much more aplomb and decency than people credit them for, and it might not be the kids that have a maturity problem with this issue. What do you guys think?

You are correct. Children are incredibly astute and resilient, it is the parents who are rigid and unbending. Children don't hate, they are taught. Allow me to point out that during the civil rights movement in the 60's many a parent was aghast at the idea of books showing interracial couples. Children at that time would have black friends until they were told it was wrong and then a new racist would be created. It's the same here, homophobes are created from innocent children because their parents can't accept someone different. Add to that, that children don't care about two male penguins, they just like the story. One wonders who is more immature to handle it.

Ooh! I wanna get that book! That's awesome. I would read it to my kids! But then again when I have kids they'll have two mommies so they'll understand. I read about those penguins in general psych class last year at college. ha ha. I think it is soooo awesome. I'm adding that to my Christmas list. ha ha.

I think parents are just scared because they themselves have to face that homosexuality is rather normal and it even happens in the animal world. I think it's more the parent's own fear than anything to do with the kids. I first learned about lesbians watching the Ellen show a long time ago, coincidently with my parents. Gosh how wonderful that moment was when I realize I didn't have to be with a guy when I grew up!

As a mother of a 3 year old and a lesbian, I will be purchasing this book for my child. I feel that it is important that my child knows that there are other famlies out there like hers. Even if it is an animal, I believe she will be able to relate the simularity of it.

I think you just answered your own question. Kids take things in stride that give their parents heart attacks.
