Content : ADJECTIVE:
1. Desiring no more than what one has; satisfied.
2. Ready to accept or acquiesce; willing:
Happy : ADJECTIVE:
1. Characterized by good luck; fortunate.
2. Enjoying, showing, or marked by pleasure, satisfaction, or joy.
By definition, it would seem that you can be content without being happy, but you can't be happy without being content.
I think acceptance goes hand in hand with being content also. If we accept things that we do not like or can not change, we become content with them. Happiness, on the other hand, is a more shallow emotion than content, easily swayed and does not come about by acceptance.
In a relationship, I would much rather be with someone who was content with me than someone who was happy with me.

I think you could say there the same when it comes to marriage. If your happy with your relationship than you are content. I don't mean you need to settle for a boring safe marriage but if you both have the same values, agree most of the time and sex is pleasurable, call it content or happy. I have been married for 23 years and my wife says we are an old boring married couple, meaning the stability in our life's that we give to each other is something to treasure. We have seen people who are not content in there relationships and that can lead to infidelity or mistrust and a lot of stress that nobody needs. I look at my wife and ask myself is this the the person I want to be with now and when I'm retired and the answer is always, yes.
I am contently happy.
Good Luck

Happiness can best be described as feeling joy or a feeling of exhilaration... kind of like driving in a car...on a nice day...windows or top down...radio blasting with your favorite song..your singing along...and not having a care in the world...
Contentment is being satisfied with what one is or has...not wanting more or anything else. They both feel great! Having either one or both of these in a relationship make it worth holding onto!!!

From what it sounds like, content is settling and being happy is actually being with the one you love and happy with the decision.

Content is what you're looking for. Content lasts. Happiness is fleeting and comes and goes. If yopu are giddy happy, I think that's more infatuation. Content is an adult form of love. It is constant and secure.
