**a gourmet snack style gift basket.....asst. cheeses, beef stick/pepperoni, some good crackers, bottle of good holiday wine (or champagne even for new years)-you could even throw a couple of cute wine glasses in there, some good candy like Ferrero Rocher or such, and maybe a cd of holiday music or scented candle.
**If you make one that is New Years themed, you could add noise makers and other party accessories instead of the cd / candle.
Baskets are nice because you can control what you spend...and you can make these to fit ANY holiday/occasion/theme-good idea for the group you belong to....
**A really nice throw/blanket makes a great holiday gift exchange gift also...and can also be found at very reasonable prices.
**Newly released movies, cds, books...
**Nice calender/desk sets...
**Personal planners - they make some really attractive ones that you can even find in outlet/discount stores.....
**A t-shirt or sweat shirt of your local professional football/hockey team.
**A PRE-PAID GAS CARD!!! You could include a note that says "To help you get 'Home for the Holidays' "
**Movie theater vouchers
I have more ideas, but I could go on forever!
Hope maybe these give you some direction/ideas.....HAVE FUN!!

It seems like every single gift exchange party I ever attend, I walk away with a shotglass set!! Seriously, I have like 4 shotglass sets, all from different gift exchanges. I think any gift involving a gift card is perfect for a gift exchange because then they know that you spent the exact amount you were supposed to spend (no $4 candy dishes being pawned off at a $20 limit party). Also, nobody will care that gift cards are sort of impersonal, because gift exchanges are sort of impersonal to begin with. It's not like you know who you're buying the gift for (not if you're playing the White Elephant game, anyway...) Last year I went to a gift exchange party and I gave a "movie night" kit-I got one of those big popcorn tubs with the microwave popcorn already at the bottom, and I put Raisinets and Twizzlers and Whoppers in there, and then I put a $10 Blockbuster Gift Card in. People were fighting over my gift in the White Elephant game! (Sadly, I got stuck with shotglasses. Again.)

I'd go to your local Wal-Mart, and check out the range of handy-dandy small kitchen aids, and general kitchen supplies. Male or Female, young or old, married or single, pretty much everybody can use a useful bit of kitchen equipment, whether it is a cooking tool, or some kind of pretty storage item. There's a really neat electrical single-burner that you can put on your countertop and put a kettle or saucepan or skillet on to cook or heat something. I have two which I use all the time. They cost about 8 to 9 bucks. Lots of stuff in that price range you mentioned.

Lots of good suggestions so far.
Unique handmade Christmas decorations work for male or female. A craft item that is local to your area can be good. A game that has universal appeal could be good. How about a gift certificate to a local bookstore?
I hope this helps.

I would say somthing like a gift certificate to either a resteraunt or someplace like home depot. If you want to take somthing tangible, go for somthing that would be fun like a chess set (nice one) or a copy of the latest Guiness Book of World Records (everyone loves that). Good luck.

Gift certificates to a local restaurant, book store, or department store. We had a Chinese auction at a Christmas party once where someone brought lottery tickets. They were what everyone was fighting over!!!

Other than booze? My family always does a gift exchange, and in my office too! We do six packs! but if you have to say no, a gift card to a restaurant is usually a good thing to do.
