Let's stick with British imperialism, since that was the most profound in its effects.
The British found themselves horrified by many features of Hindu society. They outlawed the caste system in 1835 but lacked the ability to do much about it. They also outlawed suttee (the self-immolation of widows upon their husband's funeral pyre) about the same time, and after much effort suppressed the murderous Thugee sect. They tried to suppress prostitution, without much success.
The British notion of equality before the law had far reaching consequences, in India and everywhere else the British had influence.
British rule also suppressed private warfare, clan feuds and tribal conflicts.
