critical reading comes from critic, like a movie critic. you are reading the piece and looking for mistakes, highlights, strong parts and bad parts. when you are doing critical writing, that's when the movie critic writes about how good or bad the movie was. the point of critical writing is to criticise something.

In critical reading and writing you concentrate more, you pay more attention to details, you take note of things and try to remember important things for later reference. You would normally do critical reading and writing for things like school or work.

Casual reading and writing is just done for fun.

In the critical method, you are paying extra attention to the grammar and composition, evaluating it as you might a fine wine. While when reading or writing casually, the focused is placed more on the content itself and enjoying it.

Seems like the purpose of critical reading is to take the enjoyment out of reading a book or article. It is sorta like having sex according to a checklist.
