Coming in at number 4 with the score reading 0 for 2 wickets, Sunny Gavaskar withstood the Windies pace attack - comprising of the 3 greats, Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding and Andy Roberts - at Madras (Chepauk) in 1983/84 to score an unbeaten 236.
The score of 236 remained the highest score for India until Laxman went past it in his great innings of 281 vs the Aussie at Kolkata in 2001.
Anyways, Laxman did not hold the record for too long either. Sehwag came up with a swashbuckling 309 vs the Pakistanis at Multan in 2004, which till this day remains the highest ever score by an Indian.

Sunil Gavaskar scored 236 not out against West Indies in a test match as his highest Test Score. This was one of his brilliant innings against the mights of West Indian Quardlet in those days. Certainly an inning of class, patience and resilience. He is the most successful opener India has ever had. A formidable player and outstanding sportsman who is serving his first love till today, belted an inning against his temperament when it comes to one day match. He scored only century of his life by scoring 103 not out against New Zealand in Reliance World Cup at Nagpur 1987.
