because gasoline was a by product of kerosene that people used to heat their homes and somebody figured out how to harness the power from it in an internal combustion engine

The gasoline car was invented after German engineers including Otto, Maybach, Daimler and Benz developed engines that ran on coal gas (town gas) to run on a waste product of kerosene manufacture. Kerosene was made for lighting.

These engines were used to power factories and municipal water pumps, sewage pumps and so forth. But they could not be used unless there was a gasworks nearby, so the less convenient steam engine had to be used. A liquid fuel could be moved about easily and the light waste liquids from kerosene distillation were cheap and ideal.

Soon Maybach, Daimler and Benz found they could make effective small engines running on these liquids. Karl Benz' first car was built in 1885 and was a three-wheeler. The following year Frau Bertha Benz drove it 106 km (64 miles) to visit relatives. She was the first long distance motorist.

At the same time, Gottleib Daimler, working independently and without any knowledge of Benz' car developed a motorcycle (with trainer wheels) using a similar motor. Though their companies eventually merged to become Mercedes-Benz, Daimler and Benz never met each other.

When the car industry first started, there were 3 kinds of vehicles, steam, electrical and gasoline. Both steam and electrical had way to many problems--steam where to get the water and wood, having to start heating the water long before you were going to use the vehicle, etc. electrical short battery life along with the fact that batteries were expensive. Gasoline was in great supply and very cheap. You could find it in just about any town and a lot of private homes. Gasoline vehicles were the most convient, therefore, both steam and electrical vehicles soon when out of favor.

It was the best fuel available to make enough power in the early automobile engines to propel the car.

It then became the standard fuel.

Without a standardized fuel, the car would have never been practical.

That's why we are having so much trouble getting away from gasoline.

There is no standard alternative.

If you could develop a power source that can run on gasoline, ethanol, diesel, biodiesel, hydrogen, and whatever all at the same time, and run clean, you would become rich beyond your wildest dreams.

Because the development of the automobile and the development of petroleum products coincided. The first automobiles were powered by gasoline, steam, and electricity. Both steam and electricity were problematic, steam because it required a fuel source to heat the water, usually coal or wood, and the system was heavy and potentially dangerous not to bring up the pollution it created. Electricity power was in its infancy and battery technology limited the range and power of the autos with this power source. Gasoline became more and more available as oil companies developed distribution systems and refueling stations that were convenient to motorists.

I think it was a much thought out scam by the Republicans. George Bush's Grandfather was very insightful and knew how dependent we'd become on gas. He also knew he had some boys in the middle east and could get the hook-up when we'd become so dependent. Ultimately resulting in bookoo bucks for not only his family but to help support his bogus political party.

Just know that anything that was ever wrong with the world can be directly related to George Dubya.

Because the horses went on strike.

Joking.
It was to make our lives easier, and it was a model of our technological advancements (that is now threatening our way of life, as ironic as that sounds).
