That depends on your plan. If you are asking about headphone, get the shure in ear headphones or the new bose in ear headphones...they are amazing and they cancel sound well. If you are talking about actual speakers, I recomend getting a monster cable that will connect the headphone jack of your iPod into your home stero system. Just connect the red/white chords into the back of the reciever in an open slot, and you have rocking sound from you iPod. If you dont have a home stereo system, that would be a serious investment to get top of the line stuff, but I also like bose, but many brands have good equiptment. My friend really likes Polk.
Finally, if you mean desktop speakers, ones that would plug right into your iPod, Klipsch has some really great ones, as does Bose. You can also get one's from Altec Lansing that will do alright: I had on p[retty inexpensive Altec Lansings in my dorm last year and they were plenty. Now, I am running out of a low end Acoustimass System from Bose, with 2 cube speakers and a sub. It all plugs into an Onkyop reciever, and i am VERY happy. My apartment is small, and it is MORE than enough power, and the Boses are, of course, crystal clear.
Personally, I dont like the sound dock stations... I think they compromise sound quality for size and looks. None of them sound as good as a true speaker set up, plus you cant separate the speakers if you like to feel like the music is surrounding you :). I prefer just plugging mine into the wall to charge it....call me old fashioned.
Hope it helps!

I bought the Bose SoundDock and I really like it. It sounds great, has a remote control, charges your iPod and looks better than most others.
My second choice might be the Apple iPod Hi-Fi.
