Plural

a mile is one, therefore 1 mile

more than one, add the 's'

cause we are talking about half, then it's .5 of a mile

(no 'S' at the end)

In everyday speech people would say "point five miles". Technically everything about "point five miles" is incorrect, though. The decimal is correctly read as five-tenths (of a mile) or one-half (mile). You can avoid the issue completely by using the common fraction and simply saying one-half mile, which is what you obviously mean. If you are asking how to say this in writing, that would be the best possible way.

The turn is .5 of a mile from here (‘of a’ inserted in the sentence)

or …The turn is .5 miles from here,

but actually we are more likely to say -

The turn is half a mile from here.

Well, grammatically you are not supposed to use numerals in writing a sentence unless they are over a certain value, although I can not remember what that value is and the rules change all the time. You can get around all of the questions by stating that it is "one half mile".

If you write the words out, write half a mile or one half mile. If you write it in decimals you would .5 miles and read it "point five miles."

I think its 0.5 miles. As the number 1, is singular, while although 0.5 is less than 1, still it has the digit 5, which is more than the digit 1. And also if u put it into a sentence, miles makes for sense. eg,
The station is 0.5 mile from my house OR
The station is 0.5 miles from my house. --> this i think sounds gramatically correct.
