i believe you need a passport after 12/31/2006...but any travel before that you just need id like drivers license

In January 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.

Well, where are you travelling from???

If you are going for a weekend, I guess from one of the bordering countries, I think if you area US citizen you don't need a passport, but of course some ID.

If you aren't and you need a passport it is far too late to worry now, you should have thought a little more in advance.

THE BEST NO MATTER WHAT PART OF MEXICO YOU GO TO, THE PASSPORT IS HIGHLLY RECOMENDED AND NEEDED.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT, IF YOU'RE GOING JUST NEAR A BORDER CITY, YOUR DRIVER LICENSE IS GOOD ENOUGH.
IF YOUR GOING BEYOND THE BORDER CITIES, LIKE 40 MILES FURTHER, YOU MIGHT NEED A PERMISSION. DEPENDS WHERE YOU GO AS I SAID BEFORE.
LIKE FOR INSTANCE..... YOU GO TO CANCUN, YOU'LL NEED A TRAVEL PERMIT WHICH IS GOOD FOR 180 DAYS, COST 20 DLLS. AND WITH PASSPORT OR BIRTH CERTIFICATE, YOU CAN TAKE IT OUT.
ON THE WAY BACK, YOU CAN SHOW YOUR PASSPORT WHICH IS THE BEST OPTION OR DRIVER LICENSE AND WITH THAT, YOU MIGHT BE SENT TO SECONDARY AND THEY CHECK YOU OUT TO CONFIRM IT IS YOU. IT IS RARE BUT DOES HAPPEND.
HAPPY TRAVELS AND BE SAFE IN MEXICO.

In 2007 you will need a passport if traveling by boat or airplane to Mexico. You do not need one now to cross the border, but should have a gov't issued ID card i.e. driver's license just in case.
