Hey Rej, you mean the civil rights movement of the late 50s and 60s? Just keyword in civil rights movement. Basically before the civil rights amendment to the constitution, blacks had almost no rights as American citizens, they could not eat in the same restaurants as whites, or bars, had separate recreational areas, could not sit in the front of the bus, attend the same schools as whites, etc. They were not treated equally in the judicial or government institutions either. No way I can go over all of it on answers...but this should give you a place to begin.
