The fall of the Roman Empire, was a decline from it's height to a slow death. There were numerous reasons. The Fundies and other religious folk like to use it as some sort of morality play, completely ignoring that, after about 100 ad, Christianity was the religion of the empire...

One of the major reasons was the decline of the Legions. Rome was built on the back of it's military, during the decling years, there was a definite decline in the troops.
1) The Legions began to be filled by non-Romans. As The empire grew more prosperous, less citizens of Italy/Rome joined the Legions. The ranks were filled out by soldiers from various provences, and not citizens of Rome.
2) The quality of these "provincial" soldiers was lower than the origional legions.
3) The "provincial" soldiers had more loyalty to their provences, than to Rome.

The dynamics of the leadership changed. In the days of Legions that were strong, and loyal to Rome and the emperor, there was a strong empire, but as the legions loyalty was more to the provence where they origionated, and,.even more importantly, to their General (who paid them) than the Emperor, the dynamics of power shifted. The best a strong emperor could hope for was to stabilize the empire, under a weak leader, it shrank, the days of an expanding empire was over.

Most of the decay of the nobility was probably caused by lead poisoning. The lead content inside noble families corpses, indicate enough lead to cause insanity...All the running water that was piped into the noble houses was provided by lead pipes, and all of it was contaminated by lead. So while there was a lack of sanity, and even a moral decline, this was one of the symptoms of the lead poisoning, and not the cause of the decay of the empire.

Since the Empire was built by a strong military, when that military lost it's edge, and when the soldiers were more loyal to their General, than to Rome or the emperor, it was only a matter of time until this weakness would be exploited by the Barbarian tribes, most of which had been pushed back and dominated only due to the might of the Legions.

There are alot of reasons for the decline of the Roman Empire.

There was infighting in Rome, the Emperor was completely insane, Rome had grown far too large for the number of people it had and was stopped by natural barriers on most sides of the empire from expanding. They'd also angered alot of people with their constant conquering of other nations and so their trade wasn't very good with other nations. By stopping expanding, they stopped the influx of new goods and slaves to support the empire.

Basically, they got too big, too fast, and in ways that angered everyone around them. Eventually the enemy took advantage of the weakness Rome itself had created and attacked. The empire itself was too weak and spread out to form a proper opposition to the invasion of the Goths (they were Germanic tribes that attacked from the North) and the empire fell.

So there were alot of reason for the decline of the Roman Empire.

The thing is... and its something most Americans don't want to admit... the United States is the new Rome. They're so powerful and have inundated themselves into every aspect of the world. But it can't last forever. And those people that are part of less powerful nations, will always come to hate the most powerful because they want what that nation has.

Oh, the US has alot of time yet. Roman power lasted for thousands of years. Though, time is moving faster now. Improvements are moving faster. And nothing lasts forever.

Its sad really. You'd think the world would learn from the mistakes of the past but it doesn't. We simply repeat what was done before.

There are probably reasons for the fall of Rome that I didn't think of (like disease) but basically, it was all things happening at the same time that destroyed them.

The decline and fall of the Roman Empire was caused by pretty much exactly what is going on in the United States today.... . The disintegration of all morality and moral values; the increasing acceptance of even the most outrageous sexual and other behaviours, and people became increasingly desensitized to the things that once shocked and horrified them. And interestingly, just like has been happening in America in very recent times, the people of the Roman Empire- no longer able to get enough of a kick from their existing forms of entertainment, began turning to their own version of "Reality Shows" in which people pitted their strength, endurance and tolerance against one another and anything else they could think up, and battle to the death. The more horrendous the spectacle, the more blood and split body parts; the more shocking and depraved the sexual exploits; the more they cheered and wanted.
A wise person once said that "Mankind is destined to advance progressively backwards until it eventually succeeds in destroying itself" I'm not sure that all of Mankind will meet that fate, but it pretty much describes what happened to Rome, and I am afraid that unless we get an unexpected "Epiphany" of enlightenment and understanding, the "American Empire" is headed down the last stretch towards that same destination.

They are many theories of why it Fall. Some think that the Romans brougth it on themselves, others think was because of the increasing contact with the barbarians. And some blame it on the moral decay and economic decline
