You can take the hard drive out of the computer and connect it to another working computer - set the jumper of the back to 'slave'. That way it will get added as a secondary drive and you can copy all the files you need to that other computer.

There are many ways but some may require a few skills.
In such a situation I'd use one of those live Linux CD's that just boots off a CD without installing anything to any HD, give you access to external media such as USB HD and copy whatever I can from the fixed HD to an external one. Then re-install/restore my OS, then copy the data back.Of course you need another comp with access to internet to download such a CD and burn it.I saved many a comp using this method. However if your HD has a hardware failure recovering data may not be as straightforward.
I was nevertheless able to retrieve data from a HD I accidentally re-partitioned and formatted using a software called Active-Undelete.

you're on target. only pop thecontinual in some different person's pc. you may then reproduction files off to a CD or once you've a exterior flashcontinual or usbcontinual. What i'd propose will be to get a second hardcontinual and use it only on your documents storage that way even as living house windows crashes, you'll really could restore the primarycontinual. Your documents will nonetheless be intact on a separate hardcontinual.

Data can be recovered only if the hard disk is damaged or crashed logically. It means that, damage can be classified into two: Physical and Logical.
Physical in the sense, the media is corrupted, which cannot be recovered.
Logical, is mainly due to software corruption, which does not damage the media.
A perfect example for physical damage is that hard disk crashed due to lightning.

You'll have to better define "crashed" for an answer.
Yes, data can be retrieved under certain conditions but you do not give enough info.

You can try a recovery installation as described here
http://yanswers.blogspot.com/2006/10/windows-reinstallation.html
If it does not help then below are links of free file recovery software. You have to install them in a different hard disk having windows, and connect your hard disk as slave disk. Instructions are given in the help files with the programs.
