You need to format the new drive - if it is the only hard drive in a new system, this will be done automatically as part of the installation of your Operating System (ie, windows).

If it is a second (third, fourth, etc) drive in your system, then you have to format it manually - in windows you can do this via the disk management interface - right click on 'my computer' and select manage. Find the new volume in the disk management list and right click it. Go to format.

Depends on whether it is your primary (meaning the drive from which you will run Windows) or a secondary (used only for storage) drive.

If it is going to the the main hard drive from which you boot, you will have to install Windows onto it. Put the Windows CD into your Cd drive and boot from it. Should automatically start the Windows install. Right after you do the F8 to agree, it will format and set up the new hard drive for you and then install Windows.

If it is a second hard drive, boot the PC and go into the Control Panel. Click the Administrative Tools Icon. Go into Computer Mamagement. Under storage section you should be able to see that new second hard drive. Click on it and you can format it and assign a drive letter. once done, you can use the drive for storing files (music, videos, etc.), making backups, installing programs, etc.

Depending on who you bought the hard drive from, you will need to have back-ups of your system. Normally the new hard drive comes with this software. a boot-able disk. This will put you into the /a: prompt. from there you will need to type format /c:
This process can take about 45 mins. Once completed you need to make sure you have Windows cd in the cd drive and reboot. The system will reboot and guide you through the next part of the installation.

You can't format it until you partition it. If you're going to put XP or 2000 on it then it will partition and format during the install. If not or if you're using it as a second drive, you'll need to partition it first using a dos utility. You will need to boot the pc up to a boot floppy containing the dos utility you need (Windows ME or 98 boot disk will work) then run the partition utility (FDISK if you're using ME or 98 boot disk).

After that then you will be able to format it. You can usually use the same program as above to format it also (FORMAT x: using the ME or 98 boot disk, where x is the drive letter you assigned when partitioning it.).

Try this site for some boot disks:
