It all depends on the variable of what kind of people you are dealing with. One couple might have the same amount of tiny incompatibilities and quirks as the other, but because of their ethics and the way they work out their differences, they manage to work it out and see it through every time.
It's all in how you are able to work out your problems and disagree effectively (communication), everything else doesn't mean squat when it comes to keeping it together-- including religion, different tastes, different backrounds, even infidelity.

What macro-level variables are you talking about?

In my case, along with basic incompatibility, both families worked hard to make problems for the relationship. They were quite upset when we divorced, however.

It is all ways the micro affecting the macro. greater discontent within is mirrored externally to reflect a greater imbalance. It is the perspective that is skewed.
