Its a territory thing. Humans love a bit of territory.
That's why there so much elitism about - but this is perfectly natural. It's fake, but harmless (generally).

You get to feel part of something, and at the same time identify yourself as an individual separate from anyone else.

It's an interesting part of culture, because it is the rivalry between groups (still talking on a superficial level here) that pushes things forward - competition makes the world go round.

im not sure whether it is a very original idea for a documentary, but if you have some good ideas, then go for it! my take on it, is that 'scene' is just a word some sub-culture has devised to say instead of 'cool' or 'in' . i think you would be better off looking at sub-culture as a whole, and though that is not very original either, you may be able to find more substance for your documentary. 'subculture and the meaning of style' by dick hebdidge, i think you will find it quite interesting, as you will learn generally behaviour of groups like this reflect some sort of social issues, or whats going on politically. also, maybe making a documentry about the users of myspace may be more interesting, as it actually reflects somthing that is relevant to the youth of today, rather than some word, which bluntly, means nothing. good luck

Not a very original idea for a doc, I'm afraid. What you're describing is basic human nature going back for generations. Used to be called "being in with the in crowd", "hangin' with the cool kids", or just mindlessly conforming. What was Studio 54 in the 1970s if not a "scene"? A musical group from Canada a few years ago immortalized the concept with the name of their band, "The Tragically Hip".

But if you think there's something new about this, then go for it with your doc - I'll look forward to seeing it!

What ‘scene’ are you talking about?

Please explain yourself…Cheers.

You want to make a documentary on hip vernacular? I guess it would be moderately entertaining for the non-hip............
