One friend turned 22 last September and another is turning 23 soon. I couldn't give the first one anything, 'cos she lives a little distant, but I will be meeting her soon. I want to get two presents at once the next time I go shopping, and I'm wondering what to get them.

The 22-year-old is into fashion, but I usually get her stuff like costume jewellery and handbags. She likes bright colours, too, and has loads of clothes, so it's not something she really needs as of now. She is not romantic. She loves reading though, but I've given her a dozen books. She is also easily excitable and loves to have fun.

The soon-to-be 23-year-old is not much into clothes and fashion. Her choice of colours are neutral, and nothing bright. She does like elegant pieces of costume jewellery, mostly bracelets. She might carry a handbag at times. She is a hopeless romantic at heart, but nobody would guess it 'cos of her quiet, reserved nature. She hates reading.

I can't afford anything too expensive

Ok alot of these people are saying gift cards but that is the easy way out and it makes the person your giving the gift to feel un- important like you just picked somthing up on the way to see her or somthing. So take the first girl to a spa or get your finger nails done .Then go to a place like Dunkin Dounuts or starbucks .Then head to rent a movie then go back to your house watch the movie and relax. I have no idea what to do for the 2nd one.

For the fashionista, a 1-year subscription to a fashion magazine such as Harper's Bazaar or Vogue would be great. You could also get her a bookstore gift certificate although this is a bit generic. What about her music tastes? Get her an album that is very different and not something she already has...she may come to appreciate it.

For your more reserved friend, get her a set of dance classes for 1 month...to help take away her shyness. You could even be her partner...her romantic side will come out (not in that way...) and she will have fun. If the dance classes are too expensive, you might want to get her something like a spa mani/pedi gift certificate that is natural - where they soak your hands and feet and massage them but dont over do the nail-art. I hope this helps, buying gifts is quite challening....These should run you anywhere from $30 to $100, depending on where you live.

If you cant think of anything, bake something and write a thoughtful card. This is always very touching and can be better than store-bought gifts.

Do they have the same music interests? Maybe you could treat the three of you to a concert? Or maybe pay for a girls' night out? Or, if you have the time, you could bake each friend a dozen or so of their favorite cookies? I suggest that you try thinking outside of the box. Something unusual that you know they will love. And that shows how much you care for them. I hope that helps. I'm sure you'll find the perfect present. Take care and have fun.

Go to a mall near where they live and purchase a gift certifcate. This way they each can have their choice of anything in the mall and can get more then just one type of thing. Also walmart gift cards are nice because they have a wide selection of merchandise.
