My computer after a while goes to sleep mode after 20 minutes. Of course, to "wake" it up you either move the mouse or push a button on the keyboard. Lately though, it's been waking itself up while no one's around the computer. Any ideas on why it would be doing this?

Doc - that's just the thing - I don't have any new messages or automatic program updates.

I would say that Doc8 almost has it. The other thing that can cause it is network activity. On my system(s) (since I built them myself) the BIOS has more configuration options and one of those options is the ability to wake the computer from sleep if it detects network activity, which of course is... insane because it's waking all the time, this was one of the first things I turned off. Some off the shelf systems have that option as well, so check your BIOS settings.

You haven't said what kind of computer you have, but it's common to configure a system to wake up from hibernation following some kind of trigger. Typically it is some kind of network activity, but you need to refer to your system manuals to narrow it down. if it is BIOS-related (ie the low level system which starts up your PC) , then you would need to go into the BIOS setup and work through that. Otherwise , it could be many other things application related. For example , when you have power saving mode set on your screen , your display is hibernating and it's usually keypad activity which 'wakes' this up .. Even though you say you 'turn off all applications' , there's plenty of stuff running on the system which you do not see as an application , but are there ready to do something following a trigger. If you open up Task Manager , do a 'show processes' and you will see there is a lot going on

Scientists (and sci fi writers like Isaac Asimov) have speculated that silicon can behave like carbon in terms of spontaneous self-alteration. In simpler terms, just as carbon-based life forms evolve, scientists say that silicon has the same potential to evolve. In fact, at MIT they've done some fascinating experiments in which they program "single-cell life forms" on a computer program - and then tell it nothing else... and those "life forms" actually "evolve"... the "cells" replicate, the "organisms" grow legs and arms, and the experimenters monitor it on animated screens.

So, perhaps your computer is at the leading edge of silicon evolution - your computer is getting the rest it needs and then waking up on its own. Imagine that!

Mine does it, when an automatic program update starts or new messages arrive.
