How would i go about applying for a job in a hairdessers?

I am currently looking for a job in a hairdressers in Burnley Uk, how would i go about applying for a job even if there is nothing advertised? My tutor said a should write a letter and send my cv, go around to all the salons and hand it to them to their face, but i wouldnt know what to write! Can anyone help?x
